Advent Series: Love

Do you remember the day that God fully engulfed you in His love? I still remember that night. I was completely devastated by past trauma, in sin, and trying to run away. I was so angry with God that I was basically yelling at Him from all the pain I was experiencing when suddenly I heard a tender whisper, “I love you.” To this day, that memory will always bring tears to my eyes because I had never experienced a love like His.


I was so imperfect and so broken that to hear those words was what I most needed. I needed to be loved in my mess, in my struggle, and for someone to want nothing in return from me. That is God’s love: He loves us because he can’t help it. I experience it again and again every time I have a baby. I just love this tiny little human who wants so much from me and I expect nothing in return. I simply can’t help but love each baby freely and uniquely. This love makes me want to be fierce and to protect. I can kill a mosquito in flight with only two fingers when it’s coming right for my newborn baby’s skin. I’ve done it once with each girl. There is this sense of love that protects beyond measure.


To think that God would send a tiny baby, his son, and years later offer Him as a sacrifice for us is the greatest love story I’ve ever heard. I hope that as you celebrate the birth of Jesus, you are reminded of God’s love, a love that surpasses understanding.


I pray, “that you being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.” Ephesians 3:17-19
