Luke 2:10-12 “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, who is Christ the Lord.”
Inexplicable joy. A Savior is born in a manger surrounded by animals and shepherds in the craziest of places. Our King was born and the angels said, “I bring you good tidings of great joy.” Our circumstances sometimes seem completely not what we expected; we pray for things that come in different packaging than we ever thought possible. We get so focused on what we thought it would look like that we completely miss the opportunity to find the beauty and joy of the season.
We went to the Nutcracker a few weeks ago. During intermission, I told Leona I was going to go and buy her and Allegra some candy. While I was checking out, I saw a nutcracker and decided to buy one as well. I came back to the girls and I said, “ I have a surprise for you two!” and showed them the Nutcracker to which Leona’s response was, “But Mama, where’s the candy?!” She was so focused on her expectations that missed what was right in front of her, her own shiny new Nutcracker. I could have said a lot of things but my first thought was, “Oh… she is just like me!” So many times I expect things to go a certain way that I miss what is right in front of me. I lose gratitude and with that, I lose the feeling and choice of joy. In this season, let us come back to gratitude and joy.
Let us be reminded that Joy entered the world when Jesus was born because he provides everything we need and His arrival was our good fortune. I pray we turn our hearts back to Jesus and get over our expectations of what Christmas is supposed to be like and instead rejoice in what we already have in Him - everything we need.
